A Legacy in Color

Desta Hagos is a distinguished Ethiopian artist, a pioneering woman of Ethiopian modern art, and the first female artist to be awarded the prestigious title of Laureate Artist. Her artistic practice spans more than five decades.

Mentored by Gebre Kristos Desta, one of the pioneers of Ethiopian modernism, Desta was introduced to a bold new language of abstraction. Gebre Kristos broke from the dominant figurative traditions of his time, using intense color, expressive forms, circles, lines and movement to communicate emotion and ideas beyond literal representation.

His influence can be seen in Desta's early embrace of abstraction—particularly in her expressive treatment of color and form. Yet over the decades, she transformed these lessons into a language distinctly her own. Her abstractions became freer and deeply personal, drawing upon memory, nature, emotion and the visual rhythms of Ethiopian life. Art historians specifically identify Desta Hagos as one of the students in whose work Gebre Kristos's influence can be traced.

Her paintings move comfortably between the recognizable and the abstract. At times she records the intimacy of daily life; at others, form and color become the subject themselves. Across both, there is an enduring sense of curiosity, humanity and connection to place.

A pioneering figure among Ethiopian women artists, Desta has exhibited extensively in Ethiopia and internationally over the course of her career. Her contribution to Ethiopian art was formally recognized when she was bestowed the title of Laureate Artist in 2018.
